Synopsis: Battle School is a story about a high school girl named Zazay, a young artist who is struggling with her studies and her exams.
One day, as she is about to fall asleep, instead of dreaming, she lands on a planet that is invisible to humans on Earth: the planet Battle School. This world she discovers will become her greatest help in her studies. She meets thousands of other students who also struggles with school and who have also been able to land on this planet during their sleep.
On this mysterious planet live creatures called spirits. These spirits are the souls of people who died on Earth, but for some unknown reason, instead of ending up in the void, in heaven, or in hell, they ended up here. These spirits are protected by a group of people who were created at the same time as the planet. These people are the school subjects. So one person is Mathematics, another person is French, another is Art, and so on.
These people are there to help students who have difficulties in their classes, so that they can pass their exams and move on to the adult world on Earth. But their methods of education are not the same as those of people on Earth.
On Battle School, you must choose a magical weapon that matches who you are, and a power that develops in students over time, called “imagination”. Then you must attack one of the subjects you are struggling with in a battle. If you manage to defeat it, you will get a good grade in your own world. If, on the other hand, you fail to defeat the subject, you will end up in the hospital with a bad grade in your world.
We will follow Zazay’s evolution in her relationship with school, the profession she wants to pursue, her relationship with her group of friends, her family, her relationship with her rival — as both of them are artists — and her relationship with life in general.
This story contains touching themes such as love, friendship, family, love for human beings regardless of their skin color, origins, sexual orientation, appearance or age, and hope.
But it also contains darker and sadder themes such as death, depression, failure, bullying of any kind, and rejection.
It's a comic book full of symbolism and magic, but also horror and incomprehension.
